Todd Gillis

Dr. Todd Gillis got his BSc and MSc from the University of Guelph and his PhD from Simon Fraser University. Dr. Gillis then worked in the Department of Bioengineering in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow. Dr. Gillis joined the University of Guelph as an Assistant Professor in 2005. The work in the Gillis Lab is focused upon the vertebrate heart and the mechanisms that regulate its function. The underlying theme of this work is the evolution of protein structure and function and the role this plays in determining the physiological scope of organisms. This work integrates the use of i) quantitative PCR and proteomic approaches (2D DIGE) to study how gene and protein expression change in the heart in response to environmental stressors, ii) recombinant protein studies to characterize how changes in sequence of the cardiac regulatory proteins influence their function, and iii) muscle mechanic studies to determine how changes in protein function alters muscle activation.
